•••Okere Appeals to FG for Official Customs Posts in Saki
His Royal Majesty, Oba Dr. (Surv.) Khalid Oyeniyi Olabisi Ayinla, Oyedepo III, the Okere of Saki, today received the acting-controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Area Command, Deputy Comptroller Wale Moses Adewole, alongside his entourage.
The high-profile courtesy visit, held at the ancient Okere palace, was aimed at deepening the synergy between the Service and traditional institutions.
Deputy Comptroller Adewole, an officer with a formidable professional track record, described Saki as a "strategic partner" in the Command's mission. He expressed profound gratitude to the monarch for his unwavering support of Customs operations, noting that the community’s cooperation is vital for facilitating legitimate trade and maintaining regional security.
Responding, the Okere of Saki lauded the NCS for its contributions to national security and national stability but was quick to advocate for the economic interests of his subjects. While describing Saki as a naturally trade-friendly environment, Kabiyesi Okere made a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to provide the necessary infrastructure to allow local commerce to flourish.
In a significant policy recommendation, the Okere renewed his call for the establishment of dedicated, official border stations within the Saki axis. He argued that such a move is essential to regulate and support legal cross-border trade, ensuring that local businesses operate within a recognized statutory framework.
Addressing the rising concerns of crime, the monarch emphasized that "all hands must be on deck" to ensure the safety of the region. He called for a united front among all security stakeholders to decisively eradicate the twin menaces of drug trafficking and banditry that threaten the peace of the border community..
In a move focused on civil-security relations and accountability, the Okere specifically cautioned against the use of unmarked private vehicles for official duties. He charged the Customs Service and sister agencies to ensure that all patrol operations are conducted using branded official vehicles. This measure, he noted, is crucial for transparency and to prevent confusion during enforcement activities.
The reception was attended by high-ranking traditional chiefs, senior Customs officers, and representatives of various security agencies and other critical stakeholders.
